being kind with smoothies

happy new years everyone!  i hope everyone's 2012 is off to great start.  i started mine off this year the same as last with the 5k resolution run, which a great little race.  we lucked out and it warmed to about -3c on raceday which was a warm reprieve after the -25c practice run i took last week!  brrrrrr, welcome to winter in the north.  i think it's one of my favourite new traditions and possibly the only real "resolution" i'll make each year.  {although, i have set some intentions for the year.  nothing super concrete, but everything falls under the bubble of vowing to be kinder to myself.}

and nothing says kindness by feeding my body a big green smoothie every morning.  here's my most recent favourite go-to morning smoothie.  i'm loving the addition of parsley!

{lemon, ginger & parsley}

lemon, ginger & parsley smoothie
makes about 2 cups
1 banana
2 handfuls spinach
1/2 lemon, peeled
1/3 cup fresh parsley
1" nub fresh ginger, peeled
1 tbsp chia seeds
1 cup organic pineapple juice {i use a happy planet pineapple-kiwi blend}
3 or 4 ice cubes {optional}

add all ingredients together in your blender and get going!  if you don't want to use juice, you can of course use water or a milk of your choice.  also, if you use a frozen banana, it will be much thicker so you'll likely need to increase the liquid to get things blending nicely.

{kindness in glass}

it's vibrant, green & delicious.  and exactly what i needed this morning to get me back to me.

you see, for all of the wonderful holidays i had, i forgot to heed my own advice and i let my immunity tonic regime go by the wayside.  {since we're being honest, it's possible that i didn't have it once in the entire month of december!}  well, apparently my immunitys guard was down, and yesterday i spent a horrible day with some sort of 24-hour bug.  and couldn't even keep water down, let alone a green smoothie.  it was not pleasant, but thankfully i feel so much better today.

so, today i will be making up another batch of the acv tonic and will get back to my daily regimen in the hopes that this does not happen again.

lesson learned.

in the mean time, i'm going to be more kind to myself.  with another helping of green smoothie please.

  1. I have been trying to eat more green smoothies as well. Now that I have a VitaMix in my house it make's it so much more pleasant.

  2. Love the pineapple juice addition. I love starting the day with a green glass of goodness.......just hate some of the prep since I'm out the door by 5:30 but I sure feel better for the effort. Hope you are all better and back to blogging us great ideas! Thanks Jess.

  3. Green smoothies are my favorite. Except I always ruin mine by making them super vegetable heavy - three stalks of celery, 2 heaping cups of spinach, kale, cabbage, you name it - it's horrible. But I feel so good after I drink it.

    And I like the idea of starting the year with a race. I'll have to see if they have something like that near me for next year. I love (LOVE) racing. Happy new year, lady!

  4. I have just recently started drinking green smoothies for breakfast... although, I seem to have started at the coldest point in the year, when all I want is a hot cup of coffee (which I am trying to cut back on!) I'll have to try adding parsley too- that sounds like it would be refreshing!

  5. I have a green smoothie just about everyday and parsley or kale;) are the best additions!

  6. I lack so much creativity when it comes to smoothies! I'm going to work on that :) And what a good testament to the tonic, though it stinks that you had to get sick to see it!

  7. yes! The ventures christmas album is my number one! If I found it on vinyl i'd die!

  8. brittany, please don't die, but we totally sell it @ our record store! i'd have to check and see if we have any left post-holidays, but we could find a way to get it to you...

  9. thanks angela, i'm feeling great again - thankfully it really was only a shortlived bout of crappiness.

    oh my ashlae, cabbage in your smoothies?? no wonder you don't like them! get some mango up in there and love 'em up. best of both worlds. and happy new year to you too lady.

    mariah my admission to you: i usually follow my smoothie with a coffee. BUT some days i don't want it at all after all that green goodness hits my insides :)

  10. we're all about green smoothies here! good brain food :D love the photos, as always ;)

  11. Hi Jess! I love green smoothies, too. I just can't seem to get into parsley, however. I've tried it, and even with the sweetness of dates - it was too bitter!

  12. Happy new year Jess! My 2012 intentions are very similar around being kinder to myself. I love the morning smoothie idea, but do tend to have trouble with smoothies because I cannot stomach bananas AT ALL - generally a star ingredient in any smoothie. Any ideas for a banana substitute?!

  13. Gorgeous, gorgeous smoothie. I love that you put parsley in. It brightens the flavor up and it is so good for you!
    Happy new year.

  14. I've been having a green smoothie a day and I can really feel the benefits. Haven't tried parsley in mine, but it looks beautiful, such a deep green.

  15. hi ingrid, have you tried cilantro instead? it's less bitter and equally lovely!

    happy new year to you jocelyne! try a soft, ripe pear {like an anjou or bartlette} i often use those as a switch-up from the banana. or frozen mango as the base, or even soaked raw cashews! xo

    so glad you enjoyed it shaina :)

  16. thanks jess! will try these yummy-sounding variations and report back. can't wait! xo

  17. I love green smoothies! I never add lemon, ginger or parsley though. I may try that!

  18. Made this for breakfast and it was SO delicious. Going to have another tomorrow!! Thanks for the recipe.
